styling in the backcountry

Well, here i am in Field, BC. Never heard of it? It`s a little village (population of about 180 people) 25km west of Lake Louise off the trans-Canada highway. Minus 16`, about 1.5m of powdered snow and mountains all around. But being out in the backwoods and beyond, doesn`t mean one doesn`t have to be in a designer wasteland.

Note my felted hat by Joy Garnet of Victoria. My handy purse is made by Denise Williams also of Victoria. Socks are handknitted by Heather of Sidney, BC. Some may recognize my scarf from previous Christmas gift idea blogs. Fleece pants and gaiters also made by yours truly.

Even though it is -16`, this seems adequate clothing for snowshoeing although I do notice my nose getting icicles with every inhalation!

spring trends 2011

Despite the dusting of snow that Victoria got yesterday, spring IS on its way. But does one wear when the warmer weather hits to show your fashionista savoir-faire?

1. WHITE

2. If you aren't an all white kinda gal (or guy), then black and white with a splash of colour.

3. The other strong colour trend is bright jewel tones. Think Caribbean!

4. RUFFLES

5. PANT SUITS with long sleeved or sleeveless jackets/vests.

6. And then we have the short suits. That is shorts paired with a long sleeved jacket. Hmm ...
But, of course, one of the great things about sewing, is that you don't have to follow the trends if you don't want to!

sewing shows 2011

So you have a couple days off to plan your new year. What sewing projects are you wanting to tackle? How much of the stash are you wanting to work through? Needing some classes to update your sewing skills?
Well, sharpen your pencil and put on some water for tea/coffee. Make yourself comfortable because the 2011 Victoria and Abbotsford sewing show brochures have just been released.

http://www.sewingandcraftsshow.com/

The ever popular Ron Collins has a new class on how to copy your favorite RTW pant/jean. If you have difficulty fitting yourself because you are not the perfect size 10 (who is?) Kathy Brown has a fit-yourself class. Kathryn Brenne, whose articles you may have read in Threads magazines, offers a bust cup fitting class as well as some sewing techniques information. Ce Podoluk will fill you in on some sewing and pressing techniques for fashion sewing. Know someone who will be requesting a strapless grad/wedding/evening gown? The very entertaining Patrice Godin returns with a class on corset fitting and making.

So much to learn and so little time! What will you sign up for?
